1871 The Statistics Division (predecessor of the National Statistics Center and the Statistics Bureau, Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications) is established by the Meiji Government’s Main Office

With the launch of the cabinet system, becomes the Statistics Bureau of the Cabinet Office

・New Statistics Act (Act No. 53 of 2007) announced based on full revision of the Statistics Act (enacted on April 1, 2009)
・Obtains certification for JIS Q 27001 (ISO/IEC 27001), a standard related to information security management systems (ISMS)
2008
・Starts full operation of the Inter-Ministry information system (IMISOS) such as e-Stat (general portal for government statistics)
・Starts the Annual Business Survey (later the Monthly Survey on Service Industries)
2009
・Basic Plan Concerning the Development of Official Statistics (1st Term) approved by Cabinet
・Starts provision of custom-made tabulations and anonymized data
・Starts Economic Census for Business Frame

・Receives the Japan Statistical Society’s Statistics Education Award for activities promoting the development and use of pseudo microdata for education

Starts providing micro data for general use that can be used for education

・Basic Plan Concerning the Development of Official Statistics (3rd Term) approved by Cabinet
・The Statistics Bureau and National Statistics Center open a Statistical Data Utilization Center in Wakayama City
・Partial revisions of the Statistical Act and the Act on the National Statistics Center, Incorporated Administrative Agency are announced (enacted on May 1, 2018)
・Starts providing standardized statistical data sets for education (SSDSEs) as general-purpose materials for data analysis
・Starts Statistical Data Analysis Competition calling for papers on statistical analysis using SSDSEs

・Starts the Monthly Survey on Services Industries
・Starts enterprise survey support project targeting enterprises who have a significant impact on economic statistics for the purpose of reducing the burden on respondents for statistical surveys
・Starts providing statistical micro data based on on-site facilities

・Formulates National Statistics Center talent acquisition and development policy
・Receives “Kurumin” certification from the Minister of Health, Labour and Welfare as an organization providing outstanding childcare support
・Acquires the “Tomonin Mark” certification for promoting the development of a work environment that enables employees to balance work and nursing care
2023 Basic Plan Concerning the Development of Official Statistics (4th Term) approved by Cabinet
2024 Obtains patent for microdata anonymization equipment based on confidentiality conversion processing of multi-dimensional cross-frequency tables
2025 Starts Monthly Survey on Service Industries
