The National Statistics Center (NSTAC), launched as an incorporated administrative agency in April 2003, forms a part of the central statistical organization in Japan. The main function of NSTAC is to perform tabulations of fundamental official statistics, including such things as the Population Census and the Consumer Price Index (CPI). NSTAC also performs tabulations entrusted by national and local government organizations, as well as the relevant research and development.
Due to rapidly changing and complex socio-economic conditions, the demands and requirements for official statistics have been increasing at a remarkable rate. Pursuant to the new Statistics Act enforced on April 1, 2009, the government has adopted the first Basic Plan to promote more systematic development of official statistics and to enable more effective use of official statistics.
The field operations of statistical surveys and censuses, on the other hand, have become more complex than before because of difficulties like the increase of absent households during daytime. This causes difficulty in maintaining a high quality of data for tabulation purposes.
NSTAC is committed to providing highly accurate and timely statistics, and is devoted to contributing towards Japanese society through its striving for comprehensive quality control and up-to-date information technologies. With our extensive accumulation of knowledge, know-how, information technologies, and human resources, NSTAC is confidently responding to social and economic changes.
In the second Five-year Medium-term Business Plan started in 2008, NSTAC is to work for newly designed Economic Census, the Monthly Survey on Service Industry, and other fundamental statistics such as the 2010 Population Census and the 2010-base revision of the CPI. Moreover, NSTAC started the operation management of the Inter-Ministry Information System for Official Statistics and the Business Frame, and also has started to provide tailor-made tabulation services and anonymized microdata for research and scientific purposes to improve the official statistics services under the new Statistics Act.
For the people, society, and the future, NSTAC has a motto of making reliable statistics through positive technology. We are dedicated to improving the environment of statistical services for national and local government organizations through our commitment to security management and efficient operations.
